The multimedia exhibition aimed at the general public and families was on show at the Château-Musée at Boulogne-sur-Mer between 30th June and 5th November 2012, the Erfgoedcentrum at Ename between 16 December 2012 and 26 May 2013, and then at Dover museum between 1 July and 31 December 2013.
It will be on show between 19 May and 30 September at the Canopé de l'académie de Lille (formerly Scérén-CRDP).
A multimedia exhibition aimed at families and the general public, Beyond the horizon sets out two human stories: that of the men and women who lived on the coasts of the Channel 3,500 years ago, along with the community of experts who bring this story to life today, the story of a people who left in their wake the modern communities of France, England and Belgium.
Potsherds, jewellery retrieved from marshes, post holes dug into the soil, a boat surviving under concrete...all traces of the past patiently gathered by archaeologists. Mind you, Beyond the horizon is not an exhibition of sterile artefacts. Thanks to their work digging in the rubbish of the Bronze Age, here archaeologists are the writers of history: their passion is talking about pottery, wood or metal, their mission to feel their way through ancient puzzles and their nostrils quivering with the smell of the forge in action. It is this breath of life that animates the exhibition, as if each object murmurs its story in the ear of the visitor.
Who are these men of the Bronze Age? This is a question that piques the curiosity of the visitor at the start of Beyond the horizon, and the start of a quest for clues that abound in the exhibition, thereby at one level recreating the role of the archaeologist as ‘detective’.
We sense people everywhere, as if they had just popped out for a moment. We hear the rattle of paddles hitting the water in time and the song of tools carving wood; we breathe in the smell of seaweed and molten metal, sensing the oak and the bronze...
Several thematic modules address archaeology and its techniques, asking the question ’how do we know that?’ Here, one hears the voice of the archaeologists: who better than them to convey their passion? In several places the exhibition also uses games to illustrate the questions that archaeology faces.
